Power Line Simulator
This unique training aid was
designed and built by Vail Gilliland, a long-time Chief Electrician (now
retired), for Public Service Company of Colorado. It is one of the many
custom-built, training aids that are utilized in our Kilowatt Classroom,
LLC., Seminars.
The top portion of this training aid operates mechanically. As the
position of the voltage and current sine waves is adjusted to show
different phase angles, a mechanical linkage correspondingly adjusts the
system voltage vectors to illustrate the effect of system power factor on
the system receiving-end voltage.
The lower portion of the equipment is electrically operated. The system
sending-end voltage is manually adjustable, and the system voltage and
current are metered. Adjustable resistance and reactance elements
(salvaged from a voltage regulator line drop compensator) permit changing
the line impedance. Per-unit resistive and reactive loads can be switched
in, along with power factor correction capacitors. The per-unit system
power triangle is in the upper right-hand corner.
This equipment is utilized in our Industrial
Electrical Systems Seminar and in the Medium
Voltage Systems Seminar.
